Rancho Bernardo head coach Eric Weddle won’t be on the sideline for the Broncos’ game against San Diego HS on Friday night as he’s serving a suspension handed down by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section.

The former longtime NFL defensive back, who’s in his third year as head coach of the program, took to X on Friday afternoon to voice his displeasure with the CIF-SS and explain why he’s serving the suspension, stemming from Rancho Bernardo’s 44-35 win over West Covina last Friday:

“It’s really unfortunate that I’m not coaching tonight for my kids,” Weddle wrote. “CIFSS suspended me from my assistants mishap on sideline with refs at West Covina. I did nothing wrong. How does that make sense. My boys will respond, they are united, connected and motivated!”

When asked further about the suspension, Weddle continued: “Sideline inference from my assistants. Was given no warning. two flags. Got disqualified last game with five (minutes) to go. That carries over to next week. So stupid and makes zero sense.”

The CIF-SS rules state that “whenever a coach or athlete is ejected for any reason from a contest, that athlete or coach will not be permitted to participate in the next contest. This is for all sports at all levels.”

Rancho Bernardo is predicted to win its game against San Diego HS 35-14, according to the Massey Ratings. The Broncos will look to improve to 5-0 on Friday night without their head coach on the sidelines.
