Seventy percent of Giants fans are excited for Jaxson Dart’s first start
The New York Giants have a new starting quarterback.
Unless you’ve been completely unplugged for the last week (and why? When you could be here reading our content?) you already know that Brian Daboll has named rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart the starter.
We can speculate endlessly as to why he made the decision. The leading theory is to get relief from the hot seat, but we also don’t exactly why the call was made. Perhaps we’ll find out Sunday that Dart is in fact ready to lead the Giants.
Really, all of us on the outside are along for the ride. So this week we asked the Big Blue View community how you’re feeling. Are you excited to see the Jaxson Dart era begin?
And most fans answered “Yes.”
A full 70% of fans have some level of excitement with regards to Dart’s start, with the split leaning slightly toward being “HYPED!” for Dart’s first start.
Any level of excitement makes sense, considering how well Dart played in the preseason. Dart was the best of this year’s rookie class in the preseason, and among the best quarterbacks in all the NFL during the preseason. That is, obviously, the preseason — defenses weren’t scheming, as well as keeping as many of their wrinkles as close to their vests as possible. Not to mention the fact that Dart was frequently going against depth players, as opposed to starters.
But even so, he played well.
Dart showed off his athleticism and arm talent, as well as his football IQ and ability to attack all areas of the field with velocity or touch.
There’s obviously some trepidation with regards to Dart, and 1 in 5 fans think the Giants should have held off on making the switch. We really won’t know until Sunday whether the move was premature or whether Dart is actually ready to take over. The concern is completely understandable, considering he’s the Giants’ future. Considering how vital a quarterback is to a team’s long-term success, getting his development right has to be the Giants’ biggest priority.
Fan confidence has only dipped a bit following the team’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football.
We’ve slipped a bit below 50% confidence, but fan confidence is still only five points below last week’s mark. Giants fans want to believe in their team, and the move to Dart clearly has fans excited for the future.
Personally — and I do try to avoid editorializing in these — the most frustrating aspect of the Giants’ season so far isn’t the losing per se.
Instead, it’s seeing that the Giants have enough talent on their roster to compete, but failing to finish games. They’re at least solid at each of the four cornerstone positions (OT, DE/EDGE, WR, and CB), they’ve been able to move the ball and get into scoring position, and they’ve held each opponent to 17 points or less heading into the 4th quarter, and defenders have had their hands on 5 turnover-worthy plays in the last two games.
Yet they haven’t been able to finish drives with touchdowns, the other teams pulled away in the fourth quarter, and the ball keeps finding the ground instead of the turnover chest.
It’s frustrating, but I also can’t help but feel as though the team is close. Perhaps pivoting to Dart will be the spark that finally gets the Big Blue machine running.
