9/27 Gamethread: Giants vs. Rockies

Justin Verlander vs. Kyle Freeland. Maybe.

It’s time for the penultimate game of the season. Cherish it while it’s still here. Before you know it, it’ll be gone. And by “before you know it,” I mean “tomorrow night.”

The games are meaningless in the standings for both the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies, so playing time might reflect that, but as of the time of me writing this, Justin Verlander is scheduled to take the mound for the Giants, to make his 29th start. He’s 3-11 on the year, with a 3.88 ERA, a 3.78 FIP, and 130 strikeouts against 51 walks in 146 innings. After a brilliant stretch, he struggled in his last game, giving up six runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings against the St. Louis Cardinals.

He’s up against lefty Kyle Freeland, who will hopefully give up a home run to Rafael Devers. In 30 starts this year, Freeland is 5-16, with a 5.00 ERA, a 4.18 FIP, and 120 strikeouts against 37 walks in 156.2 innings. He was strong his last time out, allowing just one run in six innings against the Los Angeles Angels.

Enjoy the game, everyone. Go Giants!
