Ryder Cup pairings Sunday feature Scottie Scheffler vs. Rory McIlroy. But will it matter?

The Ryder Cup is now down to the final day, with 12 singles matches between the U.S. and Europe. Who's facing off in each match?

It's desperation time for the U.S. in the Ryder Cup.

Only the miracle to end all Ryder Cup miracles will save the Americans in singles on Sunday, as Europe won six of the eight doubles matches on Saturday to take an 11.5-4.5 lead after two days and four sessions of doubles.

Ordinarily, there would huge anticipation for one singles pairing in particular: World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and No. 2 Rory McIlroy will play in the fourth match out.

But it may not matter.

What are the biggest Ryder Cup comebacks in history?

The biggest comebacks in Ryder Cup history were from 10-6 deficits entering singles: the U.S. in 1999 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, and Europe in 2012 at Medinah, near Chicago.

Europe needs only 2.5 points for at least a 14-14 tie and retain the Ryder Cup, since it is the defending champion. The U.S would need to win 10 points in the 12 singles matches for the 14.5 points necessary to win the Cup.

World No. 1-ranked player Scottie Scheffler and the rest of the U.S. Ryder Cup team will need a historic rally in singles for a chance to beat Europe.

That means the U.S. has to win 10 matches outright. No ties.

Given the odds, a famous New York athlete, Yankees catcher Yogi Berra, famously said, "it ain't over 'til it's over."

It's almost over. But not yet.
