Shrader, who joined Lyonnes in July from PSG, scored a hat trick against her former club, and also recorded an assist to Heaps’ game-winning goal.

“It feels great. It’s not only my win but the team’s win,” Shrader said after the match when asked how it felt to score against her old team and to win in such a commanding fashion.

“It just shows the talent that we have on this team,” she went on. “Everyone could come out and score big goals like that. So I think we just gotta get confidence every single game and we’re just gonna go out there and keep winning.”

After an early goal from Lyonnes, who are eight-time Champions League winners and 18-time French league title holders, PSG equalized with a converted penalty in the 33rd minute to level the two sides heading into halftime.

For a moment, the balanced score raised questions about whether Lyonnes’ spate of splashy summer signings were up to the task against top talent. In addition to Shrader, Lyonnes also picked up former PSG star striker and French international Marie-Antoinette Katoto, German winger Jule Brand from Wolfsburg, U.S. women’s national team midfielder Lily Yohannes from Ajax, Norwegian center back Ingrid Engen, who joined from Barcelona, and Canadian full back Ashley Lawrence from Chelsea — all during the summer window this year.

The Parisian side, meanwhile, have experienced losses to its personnel beyond Shrader and Katoto. Just before the conclusion of the transfer window, the London City Lionesses, owned by Michelle Kang (who also owns OL Lyonnes), acquired former PSG midfielder Grace Geyoro. Curiously, the player who was arguably its biggest signing during the same window, Spanish international Olga Carmona did not start the match on Saturday. The former Real Madrid full back entered the game in the 64th minute.

In the 58th minute, Shrader received the ball from left back Salma Bacha a handful of yards outside the penalty box before sending in an inviting left-footed cross to Heaps. The USWNT captain was loosely marked and rose above PSG’s back line to redirect the ball with her head past Mary Earps and into the far post, giving OL Lyonnes a 2-1 lead.

Then Shrader went on a scoring tear herself. In the 70th minute, Brazilian international Tarciane, who opened the scoring for Lyonnes, played a quick long ball deep into PSG’s half. Malawian striker Tabitha Chawinga pounced, outrunning a PSG defender and holding up the play to await support from her colleagues. Chawinga’s pass to the top of the penalty box arc was the perfect weight and texture for Shrader, who’s known to score from that exact distance. The 21-year-old struck it first time; the low driven shot was virtually unsaveable as it sailed to the same far post Heaps had found earlier.

Four minutes later, Shrader found the back of the net again when Lyonnes striker Ada Hegerberg graciously nodded down a cross for her to tap in. Shrader’s third goal of the night came courtesy of Chawinga again, this time after driving the ball to the end line before releasing it to Shrader at close distance, requiring only a touch to control and another to slot it in.

Chawinga then capped off the night in the third minute of stoppage time with a goal of her own. Yohannes delivered a long ball from Lyonnes’ half that Chawinga glided onto, catching Earps off her line and lifting it past the English goalkeeper to find the back of the net.

Despite the historic rivalry between OL Lyonnes and PSG, the former’s top opponent is currently the other Parisian team: Paris FC. The two are the only two undefeated sides with three wins a piece, and will face off against each other for the first time this season on Nov. 1. With one win, one draw and one loss, PSG currently occupy the seventh spot in the table.
