24-14 good guys
Are you not entertained?
The first half was a tense one. Alabama opened the game with back-to-back 14-play drives where they converted 7/7 3rd downs en route to burning half the clock and jumping to a 14 point lead. The Tide couldn’t get the run game going, but Ty Simpson just kept converting on 3rd down over and over.
Unfortunately, a coverage bust led to a wide open UGA touchdown, and that’s when the game got a little crazy. The Dogs fumbled on their next possession, but Alabama couldn’t get any yards and settled for a field goal. The Dogs then broke off a huge run to get to the goal line, but Alabama held strong with a 4th down stop on the 2 yard line…. except there was a defensive holding penalty, UGA got a new set of downs, and scored to get back within 3 points.
That’s when Alabama pulled out all the stops. With 2 minutes to go, the Tide marched right down the field, converting a 3rd down with a WR pass from Germie Bernard and then Simpson threw a screen pass to tackle Kadyn Proctor, who rumbled for 11 yards down to the goal line. At the end, Simpson took a QB keeper and outsprinted the UGA defense to the pylon, giving Alabama a 10 point lead going into halftime.
Simpson was exceptional in the first half, dealing with crazy crowd noise and being generally unflappable. On the other hand, Alabama was totally unable to run the ball, though, give Ryan Grubb credit, he kept trying. Hopefully that dedication will pay off in the second half. The Alabama defense mostly played really well, but gave up one big pass play on a safety blitz and then gave up two huge run plays to the outside when they lost contain. Three mistakes, but three massive ones.
Alabama has the advantage going into half number two. Now all eyes are on them as they try to maintain it. Let’s hope for the best. Roll Tide!
