Virginia’s upset win over Florida State came with a price tag.

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Saturday it had fined the Cavaliers $50,000 after fans stormed the field following their 46-38 double-overtime victory over the eighth-ranked Seminoles on Friday night.

The fine stems from the ACC’s field-storming policy, which issues escalating penalties to schools for each offense. Since this was Virginia’s first Infraction, the five-figure sum will go into a conference scholarship fund benefiting graduate student-athletes.

UVA Fans poured onto the field seconds after Florida State’s final play, which was a fourth-down pass to receiver Squirrel White that was intercepted in the end zone.

White remained on the ground briefly as the fans stromed and he was uninjured. The moment capped Virginia’s biggest win under head coach Tony Elliott, moving the Cavaliers to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in ACC play.

The conference office has been busy enforcing the policy this fall. Virginia is the second program fined this season, following Florida State, which was penalized after its Week 1 field rush against Alabama. Ironically, the Seminoles found themselves on the opposite end of a similar scene Friday.

The fine comes amid broader discussions across college sports about how to handle field and court stormings. The ACC’s penalties range upward depending on the number of violations, while the SEC has adopted a stricter policy beginning in 2025, handing out automatic $500,000 fines regardless of offense count.

For Virginia, the cost is small. Quarterback Chandler Morris accounted for five total touchdowns, two through the air and three on the ground, helping the Cavaliers outlast Florida State in a back-and-forth contest.

Virginia is halfway to its first bowl berth since 2019. They face Louisville next on their ACC slate.
