There isn’t a good explanation for an offensive effort that was this bad against a defense that’s this bad—but VT no doubt deserves credit for making this a straightforward matter.
NC State played off the wrong foot from the jump and never recovered; Virginia Tech got to bring the house on nearly every play, because no one on the NC State sideline has an imagination. It was difficult times all around.
State doesn’t have a plan B when its initial efforts offensively don’t work, or rather, it has no idea what to do with Hollywood Smothers when other teams are aware of that reality. That was a sobering piece of reality tonight—and it’s not like CJ Bailey was bad, but this was a team pressed as the walls moved in, and there was no answer.
Dave’s not coming back from this one, I suspect. It’s a rough night all around.
