Virginia Tech downs NC State 23-21 for second straight win

Two in a row for the Hokies after a fun night in Raleigh.

The Virginia Tech Hokies improved to 2-0 under interim head coach Philip Montgomery after shocking the North Carolina State Wolfpack 23-21 on Saturday night in Raleigh.

Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones completed 20 of 34 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Drones played turnover-free football in the win.

While Drones was efficient and made some clutch throws, it was the running game, particularly senior running back Terion Stewart, who was the story of the game.

The Bowling Green transfer carried the ball 15 times for 174 yards, averaging 11.6 yards per attempt. He had an 85-yard run that set up Virginia Tech’s final touchdown. As a team, Tech rushed for 229 yards, at an average of 7.4 yards per rush.

Fellow running back Marcellous Hawkins carried the ball four times for 47 yards and also had an 11-yard touchdown catch for the Hokies.

The defense deserves props in this win, too. Several players received the opportunity to play or increase their playing time and took advantage of it. One of those players, senior safety Christian Ellis, a New Mexico transfer, had two tackles, but broke up three passes, including one on fourth-and-1 with under a minute remaining to clinch the win for Virginia Tech. The Hokies’ sideline erupted after the pass breakup, and the win moved them to 2-3 on the season.

The win was an emotional one for the players, coming after a few tough weeks, during which several players sat out and some had already entered the NCAA transfer portal. It was also a big one for fans. While everyone is looking toward the future, eight games were remaining this season (including this one), and the Hokies put forth an effort to be proud of on Saturday night.

Next up is a feisty Wake Forest team that should’ve beaten No. 16 Georgia Tech on Saturday, but was robbed by the officials. That game is back home at Lane Stadium.
