Rudi Völler will step down as German national team sporting director when his contract expires after the Euro 2028 tournament.
Völler, 65, took the job in early 2023 and his latest deal runs until 2028.
"I have renewed twice. But it is really over after the summer of 2028," Völler told Stern magazine.
Völler won the World Cup as a player in 1990 and then coached the national team to the final of the 2002 tournament.
He was part of the management of Bayer Leverkusen for many years and returned to football to take the sporting director job after Germany's group stage exit at the 2022 World Cup.
Völler told Stern he would retire for good in three years time, saying: "I have had a long career, so I can let go. Football will always play a role at home, though."
Völler also praised Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, despite recent setbacks in the form of last place at the Nations League Finals and a 2-0 defeat in Slovakia at the start of World Cup qualifying.
"We can be glad that Julian is our national coach. Getting him to take on the role is the best thing I have achieved at the DFB in recent years," Völler said.
