The Chicago Bears defeated the Las Vegas Raiders in Sin City. We recap the much-needed win for Chicago.
The Chicago Bears defeated the Las Vegas Raiders, 25-24, to improve to 2-2 heading into the bye week. And special teams played a huge role, including Josh Blackwell's blocked field goal in the final minute to seal a comeback victory.
It was a gutsy win for the Bears, as they stuck it out for 60 minutes before finally sealing it. They didn't spend too much time leading all game, but they found a way to get ahead on their final offensive drive.
Quarterback Caleb Williams was not as good as he was last week against the Dallas Cowboys. In fact, it was probably one of his lesser performances this season overall. He completed 22-of-37 passes for 212 yards, one touchdown and one interception for a 73.3 passer rating. Still, when it mattered most, Williams drove the offense down the field for what stood as the game-winning touchdown. In that sequence, he did everything that a franchise quarterback is supposed to do.
The Raiders had a chance to kick a game-winning field goal after that, but it was blocked to preserve the one-point win with less than a minute remaining in the football game. From an entertainment standpoint, it was one of the best games you'll see on TV all weekend.
Although the offense stalled more often than not, forcing kicker Cairo Santos to go 4-for-4 on field goal attempts (including two from 50-plus yards), they found a way to score enough points to win.
Williams was under more duress than he'd like to be, which played a role in them not reaching the endzone every time they got to field goal range. Part of that is because of the offensive line's tough day, and part of that is the elite play of Maxx Crosby. The Bears didn't game plan well enough for one of the best players in the NFL, and it showed. Crosby had five tackles, one interception, and had Williams running for his life on every other play.
Chicago's defense allowed some points, but they were magnificent in creating turnovers, totaling three interceptions of Geno Smith and forcing and recovering a fumble by Ashton Jeanty. Kevin Byard III had two of the three interceptions, and Tyrique Stevenson had the third. Turning the ball over has been a key to the Bears winning now for the second week in a row. But Chicago's pass rush struggled to get to Smith while their run defense continues to be an Achille's heel.
Now, the Bears are 2-2 going into the bye week. After starting 0-2, both times losing to a division rival, this is a significant comeback. This must be viewed as a second start to the season. They have a chance to come out strong and be ready for revenge against a Washington Commanders team that derailed their season a year ago.
The Bears have now shown that they can win a game in which they dominate and a game in which they have to go through some adversity to come out on top in the end. That makes for some good film watching when they are back at practice following the bye. Now is their chance to get a little bit healthier and return feeling fresh.
