“We are going to celebrate like there's no tomorrow,” Rory McIlroy said moments after the team’s first Ryder Cup victory on U.S. soil since 2012.
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Let the celebration for Team Europe begin after its 15-13 victory over the U.S. in the 45th Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
“We are going to celebrate like there's no tomorrow,” Rory McIlroy said moments after the team’s first victory on U.S. soil since 2012 was secured.
During the winner’s press conference, following a discussion of Justin Rose’s putting heroics, the question had to be asked: “Justin was the leader in strokes gained putting, but who's going to be the leader in strokes gained partying tonight?
“Sepp,” said Tyrrell Hatton, referencing the lumbering Austrian, Sepp Straka, who already was sipping a beer in front of him. “Sepp will stay undefeated.”
“I don't know,” Straka said. “In Rome I was leaving for the airport and I still saw Tyrrell.”
“People will think it's me, but I'll be gone early,” Shane Lowry said.
Robert MacIntyre later would say he wasn’t so sure. “I’m meant to be on a flight tomorrow but I think Shane Lowry and I are getting lost in New York,” he said.
“Sepp, hands down,” Rose agreed.
“Dark horse in the back right!” McIlroy said of Rose.
With a look of incredulity on his face, Rose replied, “I got a bit scared of myself after 2018.”
Another possible dark horse? Perhaps Jon Rahm, who earlier in the week told the media, "I don't drink a lot, but luckily I have a bigger tank to put it in."
McIlroy wasn't done cracking jokes and for his next one-liner he supplied one of the more humorous moments of the press conference. “Fitzy has to fill in his stat sheet from today,” McIlroy said and laughter ensued.
Before long the press conference concluded and the players made their way to the practice putting green outside where bottles of champagne were waiting to be consumed and to be sprayed at one another and their adoring fans. The night was young and the party was just starting.
