Daily Schmankerl: Is Bayern Munich hesitant to offer Harry Kane a raise?; Liverpool target Dayot Upamecano wants big release clause in new deal; Eric Dier looks back at Bayern; Manchester United wants FC Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong; and MORE!

Bayern Munich is right back at it…

Falk says Bayern entering key phase with Kane (Sport Bild’s Christian Falk)

Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk does not think Bayern Munich will offer star striker Harry Kane a pay raise to stay with the club:

Harry Kane’s future is a big topic here in Munich. I think Kane is in the form of his life. His education at Bayern Munich has undoubtedly helped. Max Eberl, the head of sport, already said he’s improved at Bayern Munich. He was a big star before he came to the Allianz Arena, of course, but now he’s playing a little bit more like a winner. You know, this is the “siegermentalität” in Germany, the DNA of Bayern Munich. He’s scoring and scoring and scoring. But the contract is a concern. We shared the story about his release clause, which he has to activate in the winter if he wants to leave next summer. And the next summer, you know, there is the World Cup.

And after the World Cup, he has just one more year left. Bayern Munich can’t give him away without a transfer fee – they paid a lot of money for him. And that’s why the question has to be – will he use it this winter or not? There are plenty of rumours flitting about. He’s interested, of course, in Alan Shearer’s goalscoring record, but he’d like to win big silverware like the Champions League. Ultimately, if you want to win it, I think the best moment is at Bayern Munich. So this will be a big decision because otherwise he has to sign a new contract. And that will be a question of money because he’s earning about €24m [£20.9m] a year (gross). Bayern won’t give him more because he’s not getting younger. So this will be a big discussion.

This is kind of interesting. With his recent form, Kane is playing like the best player in the world and a perfect fit for Bayern Munich’s attack. However, he will be 33-years-old in July — an age that Bayern Munich typically tries to eschew with its players.

It is not impossible that Bayern Munich attempts to convince Kane to stay, but he will likely be able to make more money back in England. Indeed, a tough decision lies ahead for both parties.

Dier recalls celebrating with Kane after BuLi was clinched (Goal)

There are a lot of things that Eric Dier will look back fondly on from his time at Bayern Munich, but celebrating a title with Harry Kane is probably at the top of the list:

Kane was the first person that Dier turned to when that coronation was confirmed and he has told The Times of emotional celebrations: “It’s giving me goosebumps even now. It was literally a second after we won it. It was one of the best moments of my life.”

Dier was on the move again over the summer, as he swapped Munich for Monaco. He has previously spent time with Sporting in Lisbon and Tottenham in London. Stepping out of a professional comfort zone is nothing new for the combative centre-half. He said of his travels: “It would be impossible to sit down and map it all out perfectly, to decide when and where you want to go. For me, it’s like one of those pinball machines: the ball just drops and drops, you don’t know which way, all the way to the bottom. You never know what your journey is going to look like.

“I don’t really find moving difficult. The hardest thing is just the logistics, that’s a pain in the arse, the furniture, all that boring stuff. But for me, it’s always very enjoyable to come to a new country and to feel a new culture around football and life. To see how people work in different countries. All that stuff has always been just fun for me.”

Bavarian Podcast Works— Flagship Show: Season 8, Episode 12 (Bavarian Football Works)

Bayern Munich is cruising and heading into another Champions League, so let’s take a look at the factors that have powered the team so far.

Harry Kane has been a beast, the squad is driven, and — by and large — personnel decisions have worked out well. Let’s get into all of that and more on this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works Show. This is what we have on tap:

  • Why has Harry Kane been better than ever? (Less need for him to work in build-up, better complimentary players around him — losing Sane and Coman was massive, more aggressive attacking game plan and sometime more direct, truly the focal point).
  • Is it possible that Harry Kane will stay at Bayern Munich? He is not dismissing the possibility.
  • Yes! We avoided a #BayernKaren situation. We are rejoicing this in Philadelphia.
  • Tying up some loose ends — let’s check in on Leroy Sane, Kingsley Coman, João Palhinha, Paul Wanner, Mathys Tel, and Adam Aznou.

Upamecano wants big release clause in new deal (SportsBoom)

According to one report, Bayern Munich center-back Dayot Upamecano would like a €145 million release clause built into his next deal — no matter who it is with:

SportsBoom sources have been told Upamecano wants a significant wage increase which would see him match the likes of Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala. It is also understood the player wants a release clause in the region of £125million in the deal. Upamecano is in a strong bargaining position given the likes of Real Madrid, PSG and Liverpool have all been linked with making a move if he becomes a free agent. Our sources understand Manchester United could also enter the fray.

Contrary to the old days, Bayern Munich is not totally against having a release clause in its deals, so the issue between the club and Upamecano these days is likely all about base salary.

Looking back: Bayern’s rumored interest in Martinelli last summer (Sport Bild’s Christian Falk)

During the summer transfer window, Bayern Munich was rumored to have interest in Arsenal FC’s Gabriel Martinelli. Sport Bild’s Christian Falk broke down how that situation played out:

Bayern were interested in Martinelli in the last summer window, this is true! Indeed, he was a topic on a long, long list – certainly considerably lower on the list than Nico Williams and Jamie Gittins. However, they didn’t get either of the two, so they had ideas about new players and Martinelli indeed was one of the players. I heard that Bayern Munich would paid €30m-35m [£26.1m-30.5m] and that wasn’t enough of for Arsenal. They said, “No, we don’t have to talk about that”. But there were talks with Martinelli’s agents. And I’m happy that my colleague, the transfer insider, Fabrizio Romano, also confirmed this was the case.

It’s also true that Thomas Tuchel had discussed signing Martinelli during his time at Bayern. It was one of his ideas. He knows the Premier League very well, of course, from his time at Chelsea. And he made many proposals for players from this period. Martinelli was one of them. Also, Mason Mount was an idea of Tuchel’s. And now, you know, if you are on a short list at Bayern Munich, you can stay there for a while and become an idea for later. And so, you see, he’s a profile Bayern admire!

It’s a name fans should keep an eye on because the squad is not big enough for Vincent Kompany. If Bayern Munich end up losing another player it raises uncomfortable questions. Bayern fans will be more than aware of the fact that Kingsley Coman left this summer, and there was a big question mark over whether they could afford to sell him. This is why they had to go for Nicolas Jackson, but he’s just a player on loan! So it’s not immediately clear if he will still be playing for Bayern Munich next year. There are exciting talents like Lennart Karl who can offer some depth, but for the first line of attack you need clear experience. So, they have to keep an eye on many, many players. Again, for the wings, it was a hard search, but Bayern Munich made a decision to complete an important deal really early in the transfer market in order to avoid putting pressure on themselves down the line.

Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show: Bayern Munich 4-0 Werder Bremen (Bundesliga)

Bayern Munich was the home side in the Bundesliga on Friday when Werder Bremen came to town.

The Bavarians decimated the visitors 4-0 in a game that was never really close. Bayern Munich was relentless and dominant in every aspect of the match. It is not as if Werder Bremen did not try, but the players just could not match up with the machine that was Bayern Munich.

Let’s get into all of the details — here is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show:

  • A look at the starting XI — Tom Bischof and Leon Goretzka got the nod in the central midfield because Joshua Kimmich was sick.
  • A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.
  • Some final thoughts and takeaways on the match.

United back in on De Jong? (Football Insider)

FC Barcelona midfielder has been on the wish list of Manchester united for years and it appears that the Red Devils will take one more run at prying the Dutchman out of Catalonia:

Man United have set their sights on signing a new midfielder to bolster Ruben Amorim’s squad ahead of the January transfer window.

Mick Brown, who worked at Old Trafford for over a decade during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that Frenkie de Jong is the latest name on their list of targets.

Man United have tried to sign De Jong before,” he told Football Insider. “When he was at Ajax, they had a look at him but he chose to go to Barcelona, and since then they’ve tried to sign him from Barcelona as well but could never agree a deal. He’s a very good player, he showed that again when he played against Newcastle, I thought he had a really good game.

“So it doesn’t come as a surprise that Man United are looking at him again, they feel he would add something in midfield which they haven’t got at the moment. Everybody knows Amorim wants a new midfielder and he has been one they like the look of.

“Whether they can get a deal done will depend on Barcelona, if his contract talks have delayed then maybe he could make a move and take advantage of that. It looks like it’ll be up to him, if he fancies a move then he’ll look at his options and Man United will be among them, but otherwise he might decide to stay at Barcelona.”

Rummenigge likes Bayern’s chances in UCL (Sport Bild via @iMiaSanMia)

Bayern Munich supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge does not necessarily agree with the assertion by Uli Hoeneß that Bayern Munich will be the Hoffenheim of the Champions League.

“I am certain that every team, especially in the Champions League, will approach a match against Bayern Munich with big respect. So we won’t be the Hoffenheim of European football [referring to Uli Hoeneß’ statement]. I can tell you that now,” Rummenigge said.
