The second half of the 2025 Alabama high school football season has commenced and a big upset has shaken up the top of the rankings.
Clay-Chalkville hosted top-ranked Thompson on Thursday night and vanquished the Warriors for a huge 28-24 win. As a result, Hewitt-Trussville has now leapfrogged Thompson for the No. 1 spot.
That sets up a monster showdown this Friday, as Thompson now heads to Hewitt-Trussville for a battle between the new No. 1 and new No. 2. That’s one of a whopping five top-25 matchups on the docket this weekend. Below are the top 25 teams in Alabama after week six, according to the Massey Ratings.
1. Hewitt-Trussville Huskies (6-0)
After winning three ranked showdowns in a row, Hewitt-Trussville got to coast last week in a 42-6 win over Pinson Valley. Freshman Jack Floyd was impressive, throwing for two touchdowns and running for another. Senior wide receiver and Virginia commit Dylan Cope caught two TDs. The Hewitt-Trussville defense remains outstanding, too. It has n ow allowed just 41 points through six games, with no opposing yet to surpass 14 points. Everything gets put to the test this week as Thompson looks to regain the throne at the top of the rankings.
2. Thompson Warriors (4-2)
Despite holding a 14-point lead at halftime, Thompson faltered down the stretch in a disappointing 28-24 loss to No. 3 Clay-Chalkville. Star junior four-star quarterback Trent Seaborn threw for 280 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in the defeat. Receivers Darion Moseley and Trey Knight combined for 12 catches, 185 yards and two scores. Now 4-2 on the season — the other loss came to nationally-ranked Georgia powerhouse Grayson — Thompson will have a chance to get right back on the horse with another big opportunity this week against No. 1 Hewitt-Trussville.
3. Clay-Chalkville Cougars (6-0)
With the win over Thompson under its belt, Clay-Chalkville moved up two spots to No. 3 in the state rankings. Ole Miss four-star receiver commit Corey Barber was the star for the Cougars last week. He racked up 149 receiving yards and two touchdowns on eight catches while also rushing for 72 yards and a score. Senior QB Aaron Frye threw for 203 yards and the two TDs to Barber on just 15 completions. Clay-Chalkville has proven it will be a tough out come state tournament time and it’ll now make a push for an undefeated regular season. The Cougars head to No. 17 Mountain Brook this week.
4. Saraland Spartans (5-0)
Saraland holds steady at No. 4 and is coming off a bye week. The Spartans have eclipsed 40 points in each of their last four games and are projected to do the same by the Massey Ratings this week when they host winless Baldwin County. Saraland is another team that’s favored to finish the regular season perfect at 10-0.
5. Central Red Devils (5-1)
One of the national games of the week was ultimately uncompetitive, as IMG Academy (Fla.) went to Phenix City and rolled Central 49-14. IMG sophomore quarterback Jayden Wade was stellar for the Ascenders, who piled on six first-half touchdowns to race away early. Central junior QB Bobby Coleman threw for 239 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the loss. The Red Devils were held to just 55 rushing yards. From an in-state standpoint, though, everything remains in play for Central. It has another huge tilt on deck this Friday as No. 6 Auburn welcomes it to town.
6. Auburn Tigers (5-1)
Auburn picked up its third ranked victory of the season last week as it blew past No. 22 Moody, 41-7. Junior quarterback Cason Myers had one of his biggest performances yet, throwing for 196 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 151 yards and another score. The Tigers now haven’t allowed multiple scores in a game since Sept. 4, when it held rivals Opelika to 10 points. They now have a chance to land a marquee victory as No. 5 Central makes the trip this week.
7. Vestavia Hills Rebels (3-2)
After suffering a 35-3 setback against Thompson, Vestavia Hills had a bye week and is now looking to finish the season strong. The Rebels have already faced four top-15 opponents and came away with a 2-2 record, defeating Auburn and Hillcrest. They get back on the horse at home this Friday and welcome 3-2 Prattville, which is just on the outside of the top 25.
8. Hoover Buccaneers (3-3)
In one of the games of the week in the Yellowhammer State, Hoover withstood a huge fourth-quarter surge from No. 12 Parker to pick up a 45-42 win on the road. The Buccaneers held a 24-7 lead at halftime and hung on despite allowing 29 points in the fourth. Hoover is now 0-3 at home and 3-0 on the road. It stays on the road this week and will take on Oak Mountain this Friday.
9. Mary G Montgomery Vikings (6-0)
Mary G Montgomery continues its slow rise up the state rankings. The Vikings continue to cruise and are now 6-0 after a 45-0 shutout of Baldwin County. The MGM defense has now allowed just 7 points in the last three games. As previously mentioned, the remaining schedule is quite favorable, too. A 2-3 Alma Bryant team is next up for the Vikings this week.
10. Opelika Bulldogs (5-1)
Opelika received quite the challenge at home last week from No. 20 Pike Road, though it pulled out a 24-22 victory. The Bulldogs’ defense stepped up to the plate in the second half, blanking the Patriots’ offense in the final two periods. Seniors CJ Johnson and Jordan Waits combined for 200 rushing yards in the win. Opelika only has top-25 matchups on its schedule from here on out. It now takes on No. 25 Dothan this Friday.
