Germany's four Olympic candidate cities or regions have successfully completed the first of three stages being used to whittle down the field.
Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region are all vying to host the Olympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044.
"The four applicants have done excellent work over the past few months and have developed their quite different concepts to the point where they already all have the potential to compete internationally," Thomas Weikert, president of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), said in a statement on Tuesday.
After the four candidates submitted their application documents on time at the end of May, the concepts were further developed in close collaboration with national sports associations, the Olympic federations and the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS).
The DOSB then reviewed the submissions across six areas with eight subcategories to ensure they met minimum requirements.
The four bidders now have until the end of May next year to refine their concepts further in collaboration with the DOSB.
By June 2026, they can conduct a referendum to gauge public opinion before a decision on Germany's official candidate is made later that year.
