In a pre-match press conference before Liverpool’s trip to Galatasaray, Hugo Ékitiké (23) commented on the red card which he received during the Premier League champions’ 2-1 third round victory against Southampton. The France international attacker was given his marching orders for removing his shirt during the celebrations of the English club’s winning goal.
The 23-year-old had forgotten he was already on a yellow card when he removed his shirt. It was reported that Ékitiké received a financial sanction from the Anfield outfit for his dismissal. However, Foot Mercato reported, as later confirmed by Arne Slot, that the club did not issue any sanction against the striker for his actions. The Frenchman missed Liverpool’s first defeat of the season in the Premier League against Crystal Palace as he served his suspension.
Ékitiké regrets his actions
Discussing the red card against Southampton, the former Eintracht Frankfurt forward said, “That wasn’t smart. I felt a bit disappointed to watch the boys from home on Saturday. And as I’ve said before, I apologised to everybody already, to my teammates, that kind of thing won’t happen again.”
