There have been rumblings for weeks that Tyreek Hill’s days with the Miami Dolphins are numbered. Following his season-ending injury in Week 4, there are now several reasons why he is guaranteed to be playing elsewhere whenever he returns to the field.
In their “Monday Night Football” game against rivals, the New York Jets last night, Hill’s leg was mangled during a sideline tackle early in the third quarter. The video of the injury was more than enough evidence for even a novice sports fan to know his 2025 season was over.
However, his entire career in Miami is probably over for three key reasons. The first of which was revealed on Tuesday morning by NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero. According to him, not only does Hill have a torn ACL, but he has “multiple” ligament tears in his knee and is set to undergo “major reconstruction surgery” this week.
#Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill is set to undergo major reconstruction surgery of multiple ligaments today, putting his status for 2026 in question. Meanwhile, the status of #Ravens QB Lamar Jackson and #49ers QB Brock Purdy for Sunday is up in the air. The latest on @gmfb@nflnetworkpic.twitter.com/j2OuOf8idt

A regular ACL tear can be difficult for NFL players to return from. San Francisco 49ers star receiver Brandon Aiyuk is still not ready to take the field after tearing his ACL early in 2024, and Odell Beckham missed all of the 2022 NFL season after tearing his ACL in the Super Bowl. However, Hill has multiple ligament tears. Meaning there is a real chance he could miss most or all of 2026.

Dolphins can avoid some big Tyreek Hill bonuses in March by cutting him
That leads to another key reason why the Dolphins will likely move on from Hill after this season. Pelissero revealed Hill is set to get a $5 million roster bonus and has an $11 million injury guarantee that will both kick in if he is on the roster the third day of the new league year in March.
With his contract guarantees met, it just makes far more sense to cut him before the new league year and save a bunch of money on a player who may not even take the field in 2026.
Then there is one unexpected reason why Hill is likely done in Miami that emerged after the injury. Players know when an injury will end their season and lead to surgery. Fans are used to seeing NFL players looking crestfallen as they are carted off following a major leg injury. But Hill was the opposite on Monday night. He was instead smiling and cheerful. As if he were free of some sort of pressure.
There have been rumors about his unhappiness in Miami over the last year, as well as the team’s frustration over infractions in and outside their facility. If he seems thrilled to be done with the season, that just doesn’t seem like the type of player the Dolphins need amid the culture change they began in the offseason.
