Earlier in the day, Arsenal poured water over Real Madrid’s hopes of signing William Saliba by extending his contract.
The Frenchman has indeed signed a new deal with the Gunners that will keep him at Emirates until 2030, effectively fending off interest from Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants were among Saliba’s top suitors, as the club continue to look for serious defensive reinforcements in 2026.
Saliba on Trent, Real Madrid interest
In a recent interaction (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Saliba talked about his new contract, notably addressing the interest from Real Madrid.
The Frenchman particularly talked about Trent Alexander-Arnold and how he moved to Real Madrid on a free transfer.

The defender highlighted how Trent joined Los Blancos because he had already won everything at Liverpool, whereas he has yet to win anything at Arsenal.
“He won some titles at Liverpool, with me I didn’t win anything here except Shield. I want to stay here and win a lot of trophies,” he said.
The former Saint Etienne starlet added, “I love this club, I couldn’t leave without giving something back”.
Many may find Saliba’s comment funny, as it was an unintentional reference to Arsenal’s failure to win titles. Nevertheless, it is clear that the Frenchman is passionate about continuing at the club.
Regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest defenders, Saliba certainly has a close affinity with the Gunners and it appears the defender wants to give back more to the team before taking the next step in his career.
As for Real Madrid, the club can finally put an end to their pursuit of the centre-back, and focus on other targets, including Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate, who is expected to decide his future in the coming months.
