WINNER WINNER SPECIAL HOMECOMING DINNER
It was a nervy start from both sides, and either could’ve taken advantage as Enzo and Garnacho both had decent sights at goal, while at the other end Lukebakio’s shot was turned onto the post by Sanchez then Richard Rios couldn’t get the ball out of his feet for a point-blank effort.
Rios made much better contact the next time he had the chance; unfortunately for him, it was in front of his own goal as he finished off Garnacho’s cutback. Enzo probably had a tap-in behind him.
The goal settled the game down a bit, with Chelsea establishing a smidge of control, though without posing too much threat. We had some positive intentions, but the final ball was lacking. The one time we did find a good pass, Ty George couldn’t quite beat Trubin from close range.
Benfica came out strong from half-time and Sanchez was called into action a couple times, though with the linesman’s flag also (eventually) going up in both cases. Maresca refreshed the legs in attack around the hour-mark, and that helped the team regain a bit of control.
And it was all looking good until the final ten minutes when it got a bit nervy once again as Benfica ratcheted up the pressure and we had some trouble dealing with that. But in the end, we’d hold on to the 1-0 win, even with Joao Pedro getting a second yellow in the final seconds for a careless high boot.
Carefree.
- Badiashile’s first start of the season; Caicedo passed fit to start in midfield; bit of a B-team in attack with George again preferred over Guiu
- Clean sheet!
- Third red in our last four games! JP’s first yellow was very harsh and the second was entirely unintentional and accidental.
- Next up: Liverpool at home on Saturday night, then the October international break
- KTBFFH
