Manchester United starlet Chido Obi has not had the season he had perhaps dreamed of over the summer.

Meteoric rise last season

The young Danish striker left Arsenal’s academy in the summer of 2024 and joined United.

He took to the club like a duck to water, scoring numerous goals in the youth team and playing a vital role in United’s run to the Youth Cup semi-final.

Obi also made his first team debut in February and regularly outplayed last season’s first choice striker Rasmus Hojlund.

The 17-year-old made eight first team appearances last year including 90 minutes against Brentford in May.

Lack of opportunities this season

He also scored two goals in United’s post-season friendly match versus Hong Kong but hardly got a look in during the summer tour of The United States of America.

He has not been in the first team squad this season and has had to be content playing youth football. The forward has scored three goals in six Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy matches.

National team omission

Denmark U21 manager Lars Knudsen has responded by not including the exciting starlet in the latest squad for October matches.

Speaking to Danish paper Tipsbladet he claimed, “Chido is at United right now and working on some things purely sportingly that he needs to put into his game. He sometimes starts in the under-21 team. We have a close dialogue both with Chido and with the club about where he is in terms of development.”

The coach also stressed that they have been observing his progress closely and will continue to do so.

Pressed on what Obi needs to improve he explained, “among other things, he needs to participate a little more in some team-related things. He is a good goalscorer, but he could also score many specific types of goals.”

Knudsen stressed that the forward “clearly has some top skills” and “exciting potential” but he must continue to work hard if he is to become the finished article.
