Mainz board member for sport Christian Heidel said he revised his opinion about the Conference League ahead of his team's debut in the competition against Omonia Nicosia on Thursday.

"I'll be completely honest: When this thing was first invented, I didn't understand it at all. Now we're involved and we understand it well," he said.

In recent years, we have seen "who has participated. Also, who has won the Conference League. I therefore have to revise my opinion. It's a very exciting competition that we are really looking forward to," he added.

The Conference League had its debut season in 2021-22 and was created as the third-tier continental competition in Europe behind the Champions League and the Europa League.

Mainz are playing in Europe for the first time since 2016-17 season, when they participated in the Europa League but didn't make it past the group stage.

"We know exactly where we come from. We know exactly what economic opportunities we have. And that's why we are now enjoying it," Heidel said.

The club doesn't have big ambitions in the competition, but "it's of course our goal to make it through the league phase," Heidel said.
