Real Madrid prodigy discusses comparisons with Gigi Buffon – ‘Want to make my own history’

Real Madrid’s goalkeeping department is already strong, boasting world-class names like Thibaut Courtois and Andriy Lunin. 

However, one young talent is beginning to attract attention in the youth ranks, namely, Fran Gonzalez. 

The U-20 goalkeeper recently spoke to AS about his international commitments and shared insights into his journey at Real Madrid, giving fans a glimpse of a promising future.

When asked about a comparison to legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon made by former manager Carlo Ancelotti, Fran remained grounded. 

“It’s always nice to be compared to legends, but I want to make my own history and be known as Fran Gonzalez,” he said. 

The young shot-stopper is determined to carve out his own legacy at the club rather than live in the shadow of established stars.

Learning from the best

Fran Gonzalez has already benefited from training alongside Thibaut Courtois, one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

He spoke warmly about their relationship, stating, “He’s an incredible person and always supports me. He cares deeply about me and wished me luck at the World Cup.” 

Such mentorship is invaluable for a player aiming to eventually break into Real Madrid’s senior squad.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper made his senior team debut on 4 April 2025 against Valencia, which made him the youngest goalkeeper to debut for the club since Iker Casillas. 

Although the match ended in a defeat, he said, “My first-team debut at the Bernabeu was a dream come true.”

Although it is still difficult for Fran Gonzalez to secure a spot in Xabi Alonso’s starting XI, the signs are encouraging. 

His dedication in training and ability to seize opportunities when called upon will be crucial for his development. 

Those at the club will be keeping an eye on Fran Gonzalez as a potential future star in the club’s goalkeeping legacy.
