Barcelona are reportedly considering delaying their return to Camp Nou, after months of working to receive teh licence to reopen the ground. Despite a UEFA announcement that their next Champions League home game would occur there, Barcelona may decide not to do  so.

The Catalan giants were initially due head back to Spotify Camp Nou last November, but consistent delays have meant that Barcelona have been forced to continuously push back their return date. Over recent weeks, Barcelona have been applying for their right to reopen the ground, which the City Council have thus far denied. However this week UEFA announced that Barcelona’s clash with Olympiakos on the 21st of October will take place at Camp Nou.

Barcelona considering delaying Camp Nou return

According to Diario AS, Barcelona are now considering delaying their return for another month. This would primarily be due to finances. While Barcelona must pay between €300-900k to rent Montjuic from the Council, they did manage to get over 50,000 fans back there for their first game on the Magic Mountain against Real Sociedad.

The initial plan was to head back to Camp Nou with 27,000 fans, and then increase the capacity to 45,000 fans, and finally 60,000 fans before the third tier work is started. After missing out significantly on two home gates while playing at the 6,000-seater Estadi Johan Cruyff in their first two home games, Barcelona are considering remaining at Montjuic until Camp Nou is ready for 45,000 fans, which would be the more profitable option. This would entail delaying their Camp Nou return until the 22nd of November, when they face Athletic Club after the third international break.

Almost a year behind schedule

That would bring their return to the stadium within a week of year-long delay. Although Barcelona have assured that the delays are due to factors beyond their control, or those of construction group Limak, it has been a major financial drain on the club’s accounts. In addition, Barcelona were originally scheduled to return with 60,000 fans.
