Report card for the Jets following 27-21 loss to the Dolphins in Week 4 on 'Monday Night Football'
After almost stealing a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3, the New York Jets began a stretch of games against teams with losing records against the Miami Dolphins.
But, costly mistakes and more undisciplined play allowed the Dolphins to get their first win of the season with a 27-21 win. While there were some positives, it was another forgettable game for the Jets (0-4) who will look to get their first win of the season in Week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys.
Here is the Jets Wire's Report Card for the team's Week 4 loss to Miami (1-3):
Passing Offense: C
Justin Fields was much better in Week 4 than his last game against the Buffalo Bills. He finished 20 for 26, 226 yards and a touchdown. However, his penchant for holding the football too long hurt him as he had a bad fumble that was one of three turnovers the Jets had in the game. It wasn't a flawless performance by any means, but it was a major improvement from his Week 2 disaster against the Bills.
Garrett Wilson had another solid game with six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. Mason Taylor had his best game as a Jet. The rookie tight end had five catches for 62 yards and hopefully, the Jets have found a badly needed additional weapon for Fields. On the flip side, Allen Lazard, Josh Reynolds and Arian Smith were terrible as the had one catch for eight yards on three targets combined.
Rushing Offense: C
Like Fields, Breece Hall had a much better game, finishing with 81 yards on 14 carries as well as five receptions for 30 yards. The Jets as a team rushed for close to 200 yards on the ground with Hall and Fields combining for 162 yards. Fields had 81 yards rushing and turned a broken play into a 43-yard touchdown run. Tanner Engstrand called a solid game and never got away from the run despite not having a lead all night.
But, the fumble by Braelon Allen in the red zone early in the game was a backbreaker as it would have led to a touchdown. In hindsight, it cost the Jets the game. Allen was injured during a kickoff return and will miss a few weeks with a sprained MCL. The offensive line did a great job opening holes and Armand Membou is already looking like a cornerstone offensive tackle for this team.
Passing Defense: D
It’s officially time for changes to the secondary. Another forgettable game by Brandon Stephens and Andre Cisco hurt the team once again. The Jets were beaten by Darren Waller, who was out of the league last season, for two touchdowns. Sauce Gardner was beaten by Waller on one of his touchdowns and his play has been concerning since his strong performance against the Steelers in Week 1. Sauce wanted to get paid and the Jets obliged. If you’re going to take the big money contract, you need to start delivering big results.
The pass rush badly missed Jermaine Johnson for the second straight week as the Jets produced no sacks from Will McDonald, Micheal Clemons, Braden Macgregor and rookie Tyler Baron.
Rushing Defense: C-
De’von Achane rushed for 99 yards and scored a touchdown that sealed the victory for Miami. The Dolphins as a team rushed for 123 yards on the ground and Achane averaged five yards a carry. He didn't dominate the game by any means, but did enough to get Miami a win especially after they lost Tyreek Hill to a season-ending injury.
Special Teams: D
Isaiah Williams will most likely be waived after an absolutely brutal game where he inexplicably played the opening kickoff of the second half instead of letting it go out of bounds, which would have set the Jets up with excellent field position. It resulted in a fumble which set up Darren Waller's second touchdown of the game. Williams also decided to fair catch a punt on the two-yard line instead of letting it go into the end zone for a touchback.
We were praising Chris Banjo last week for the job he was doing with this unit as they were ranked fourth in the league leading up to this game. They took a major step back on Monday night. The only reason why they don't receive a failing grade is because Nick Folk made two field goals from 50 and 58 yards as he continues his strong season.
Coaching: D
Aaron Glenn keeps trying to convince anyone who will listen that this isn’t the same old Jets, but their play on the field tells us a different story. The Jets were penalized 13 times for 101 yards, which is a disgrace. We were treated to yet another personal foul penalty, this time on rookie Francisco Mauigoa. The offense took too long to recover after the Braelon Allen fumble and the secondary continued to struggle.
It's fine to knock Allen for the fumble, but the offense overall played well. The defense continues to be a complete disaster with the same mistakes and undisciplined play happening each and every week. While Steve Wilks was down some key players in Johnson, Quincy Williams and Marcelino McCrary Ball, he failed to make adjustments with the personnel he did have available and the pass rush was once again non-existent.
The Jets have had their moments but as a whole, Aaron Glenn's first season as head coach has been a disaster. Nothing has been fixed and there has been a stunning amount of regression from some of the holdover players from Robert Saleh's defense last year. It’s way too early to write off Aaron Glenn and his coaching staff. But, patience is wearing thin among Jets Nation and it’s tough to blame them.
