Olympiacos visits North London to take on Arsenal for Matchweek 2 of the League Phase of the Champions League. The visitors opened their CL campaign with a 0-0 draw against Cypriot side Pafos, who played much of the match with 10-men. The Gunners, as you probably know, won 2-0 away at Bilbao. Arsenal have won 14 of 15 CL home openers, it’ll be important for Mikel Arteta’s side to extend that record with an eye towards those all-important top 8 spots in the table. You’ve gotta win your home matches!
That solitary non-win from that 14 of 15 record was a 2015 loss to…Olympiacos. The Greek side have bested the Gunners on three straight trips to the Emirates, the longest losing run on home soil to any opponent. Those three loses are also the tied-most that Arsenal have lost to any club at home (Bayern Munich are the other). Olympiacos sit atop the Greek Super League through five matches on 13 points with thirteen goals scored and just three conceded. The Greek side are an experienced, veteran bunch who are not likely to be awed by the bright lights playing away in the Champions League.
There is little need to get into the in’s and out’s of the matchup. This is a game that Arsenal should win. Any win will do, but you’d like to see a comfortable one. They have much more talent than Olympiacos and are playing at home. This should be a 2- or 3-nil (or more).
Arsenal don’t have any new injury concerns coming into the match. Noni Madueke and Piero Hinacpie are both out as are longer-term absentees Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Ødegaard are all back and available following their respective injuries.
The visitors are without Roman Yaremchuk and Lorenzo Scipioni.
Lineups will be posted when available.
