Senior running back Ty Cummings etched his name into the Georgia high school football history books last week. There’s dominant performances, then there’s what the 5-foot-8, 180-pounder accomplished last Friday for West Laurens.
On just 19 carries, Cummings rushed for 615 yards against Baldwin, breaking the state single-game rushing record, which was set just last year by Coffee’sTyrese Woodgett (605). Cummings tallied eight touchdowns in a 70-55 victory.
His eight scoring runs totaled a whopping 560 yards alone. Those eight runs averaged 70 yards and every run came from at least 50 yards out. Once Cummings found an inch of space, there was no stopping him.
“I gave thanks to my offense line and my receivers and everybody that allowed me get the touchdown,” Cummings told local station 13WMAZ after the record-setting performance. “It was a great feeling to score and have all the teammates and parents and supporters cheering for me.”
The win kept West Laurens undefeated on the season as it now sits at 6-0 for the first time since 1973. The Raiders are averaging over 45 points per game and are currently favored by the Massey Ratings to go undefeated in the regular season.
Cummings, a Georgia Southern commit, is now over 1,300 rushing yards and has 18 total touchdowns as a senior. He’s on the road to eclipsing 5,000 career yards on the ground as West Laurens looks to contend for a 3A state title.
The Raiders are on a bye this week and will return to action on Oct. 10 against the Academy of Richmond County. West Laurens is now the No. 112 team overall in the Peach State, according to the Massey Ratings.
