AUGUSTA, GA (WJBF)- Lucas Johnson from Westminster Schools of Augusta is this week’s scholar athlete.

As with all our scholar athletes, Lucas Johnson of Westminster excels in the classroom just as much as he does in his athletics. But Lucas also recently set a cross-country mark for the second fastest time in the state of Georgia.

He’s a 4-time all-region and 4-time all-state selection, a 2024 U.S track & field and cross-country coaches’ association All-American with region and state championships in track. Lucas says being one of the state’s best is a gratifying feeling.

“It was definitely a huge accomplishment. It’s been something I’ve been looking forward to for years,” Johnson said.

“Ever since my friend set the record a couple of years ago, I knew it was something I could achieve. My life-long goal was to break 15 in the 5k so finally getting that was a huge relief.”

“He’s always been super disciplined. It’s just part of the way he approaches things with running, eating, resting, and classroom work,” said Lucas’ father Aaron Johnson.

“He did his first run when he was two or three years old and I can remember I see those pictures, and I remember in his first race we were surprised at how fast he finished,” said Lucas’ mother Patrice Johnson.

“How he’s rooted in his Christian faith and as he gets on to a team and building relationships with them and wherever he goes to college.”
