CM Punk and Cody Rhodes appear in AEW Dynamite 6th Anniversary video

As the company celebrated a milestone milestone, it minimized but didn’t erase two big names from its history.

In addition to building toward their WrestleDream PPV coming up in a few weeks, AEW’s two-and-a-half hour Dynamite tonight (Oct. 1) was a celebration of the show’s sixth anniversary.

A video commemorating the milestone was shown early on in the episode that aired on TBS and streamed on HBO Max. It didn’t get everything from six years into its brief runtime, but it hit the most important stuff. It also didn’t whitewash a couple key figures from AEW history that we wouldn’t have been surprised if it had.

The less surprising of the two was reigning Undisputed WWE champion Cody Rhodes. Rhodes’ departure along with wife and fellow founding executive Brandi was shocking, but not too dramatic (at least not initially; as time’s gone by Cody’s made it more clear he had issues at AEW that he hasn’t shared… yet). So it’s not too surprising to see him make an appearance from an early scene with MJF and Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle at the 32 second mark.

An appearance of the second man is more unexpected, and less of a quick cut. At 48 seconds, we get a few shots of one of CM Punk’s good nights working for Tony Khan… when he got to partner with Sting, and they donned matching facepaint for the occasion. We know a lot more about Punk’s many badnights working for TK, some of which he shared himself.

But they’re part of the company’s history, and they didn’t completely ignore that tonight. Thanks to Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp for putting that on our timeline:
