FIFA president Gianni Infantino has rejected any intervention in conflicts and wars and rather stressed the unifying power of football.

A statement by the ruling body said that Infantino stressed the importance of peace and unity at a FIFA council meeting on Thursday, especially in light of the Gaza war and calls to suspend Israel from international competition.

“FIFA cannot solve geopolitical problems, but it can and must promote football around the world by harnessing its unifying, educational, cultural and humanitarian values,” Infantino was quoted as saying in the statement.

“At FIFA, we are committed to using the power of football to bring people together in a divided world.

"Our thoughts are with those who are suffering in the many conflicts that exist around the world today, and the most important message that football can convey right now is one of peace and unity."

Infantino said he was in a constant dialogue with the leaders of FIFA's confederations on this matter.

Officials from Europe's governing body UEFA are reportedly discussing a possible suspension of its member Israel. A decision is said to have been postponed after the latest peace plan proposal by United States President Donald Trump.

A suspension of Israel would end its chances to qualify for next year's World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada. The American government has said it opposes any sanctions against Israel's team.
