Tennis tournament play starts Friday with Section III title matches for four classes hosted by higher seeds October 8.
Postseason play starts Friday for girls tennis teams in Section III after their playoff brackets were released Thursday morning.
Competing in four classes this fall, Baldwinsville, East Syracuse-Minoa, Oneida and Cazenovia are the No. 1 seeds. Oneida, Cazenovia and Fayetteville-Manlius won sectional titles in 2023 and 2024 in three-class team playoffs.
Only classes C and D have first round matches scheduled for Friday. Quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be played next week with higher seeds hosting all matches, including the four October 8 finals. The top four teams have byes into the Class C quarterfinals, and there are two first round matches in Class D.
Fayetteville-Manlius fielded two teams this fall and its "green" team is seeded second in Class A behind unbeaten Baldwinsville (12-0) with a 12-1 record. Baldwinsville beat Fayetteville-Manlius green 6-1 during the regular season.
The Fayetteville-Manlius "white" team was 3-5 during the season and is not among the eight teams in the Class A playoff field.
Rome Free Academy, winner of 11 of 12 regular season matches and unbeaten within the Tri-Valley League's Colonial Division, is seeded sixth in Class A and play at No. 3 Liverpool (10-3) Monday.
The "new" Class B has a three-team bracket. No. 2 Whitesboro (8-4) plays a single semifinal match at home Tuesday against Fulton (7-8) with the winner advancing to play at No. 1 East Syracuse-Minoa (10-4) the following day.
Undefeated Oneida (15-0) gets the winner of Friday's match between Chittenango (5-6) and Jamesville-DeWitt (6-7) in Monday's Class C quarterfinals. Oneida defeated Jamesville-DeWitt 4-3 in last fall's Class B final.
Elsewhere in Class C, New Hartford (7-5) is seeded seventh and play at home Friday against No. 10 Central Valley Academy (6-8) - New Hartford won 7-0 when the teams played a Tri-Valley League crossover - and No. 11 Camden (6-8) travels to South Jefferson (7-4) for a Friday match.
Seeded seventh and eighth, Little Falls (7-4) and Westmoreland (5-4) host Friday's first round matches in Class D. Little Falls plays Manlius-Pebble Hill (3-9) with the winner advancing to play at No. 2 Copenhagen (12-0) Monday, and Westmoreland plays Clinton (5-6) with that winner meeting Cazenovia (14-0) Monday.o
Westmoreland and Clinton played matches on back-to-back days in September with each winning on its home courts.
Unbeaten Sauquoit Valley (9-0) and Utica-Notre Dame (12-4) are seeded third and fourth and play home matches Monday, Sauquoit Valley against Skaneateles (7-3), and Notre Dame against Beaver River (9-3).
The Section III playoffs feed into a state tournament with two divisions - classes A and B compete in Division I, C and D in Division II, and crossover playoffs are scheduled for October 11 at Cortland High School.
Oneida, the Class B champion, defeated Class C Cazenovia the last two years and advanced to the state's Division II semifinals; Oneida was also a semifinalist in 2021, the first year of the state's current team tournament.
