The winger had a pretty horrific sub showing for Chelsea on Tuesday night against Benfica, another worryingly poor performance when given a chance by Enzo Maresca. The club aren’t giving up on him, however:
“Gittens has struggled since signing for £48.8million from Borussia Dortmund, but Chelsea retain full faith that he will come good, it being early days in the 21-year-old’s career,” Gill wrote.
Well, it would be a little worrying if they no longer had faith in him coming good after just a handful of starts for the Blues. Although we know plenty of Blues fans who would say they’re in exactly that boat…
Let’s just hope we see the best of him before too long.
Tuchel sees Blues in action – but who was he watching?
It was also noted that England manager Thomas Tuchel was in the stadium for the game. We don’t think he’s interested in Tyrique George just yet, given how much competition there is in England’s attack already.
We also don’t think he’s interested in Jamie Gittens either, given the reasons above. He already knows Reece James pretty well from their shared time at Chelsea.
The best explanation is that he was there to see Trevoh Chalobah. The youngster has had some good games this season and is playing in perhaps England’s weakest position. Tuchel gave Chalobah his Chelsea debut, and could be about to do wonders for his Three Lions career too.
Even if he doesn’t end up being a starer, being in the picture at all would be great validation for all his hard work in proving people wrong.
