Michael La Sasso was assessed a two-shot penalty on the par-4 sixth hole on Thursday during the first round of the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Michael La Sasso, the lone amateur in the field in the 2025 Sanderson Farms Championship and also a fan favorite because of his local ties, was assessed a two-shot penalty on the par-4 sixth hole on Thursday.
La Sasso, a member of the Ole Miss golf team and the 2025 NCAA champion, was deemed to have violated Rule 8.1a after improving his lie. He originally made par on the hole but his score was adjusted to reflect a 6, and instead of signing for a 6-under 66, which would have given him solo fifth place after one day, he officially posted a 4-under 64. Still, he's tied for 13th and only three shots back.
La Sasso is playing a PGA Tour event for the sixth time and was excited to compete in the state of Mississippi, saying before the tournament started: "We only have one event for school that we play in Mississippi, so it's always nice coming back and playing in the home state. There's a lot of people that have come up to me so far this week that are Ole Miss alums and stuff like that. Being around a good group of people, I'm really fortunate to be here."
There is a four-way tie for the lead among Eric Cole, Sam Ryder, Garrick Higgo and Danny Walker at 7 under.
