Report: Brock Purdy suffered a setback in Week 4

49ers QB Brock Purdy reaggravated his toe injury against the Jaguars

The San Francisco 49ers could be without Brock Purdy for more than one game. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was asked prior to kick off how close Purdy was to playing in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams:

Not close. My understanding is that Brock Purdy sffered a setback in the loss against the Jaguars. Basically, got hit the same way, remember, he was dealing with that turf toe injury. Came in, reported soreness, had an MRI. The MRI revealed an aggravation of that turf toe. Not major, major. But out tonight.

I’m told he’s considered week-to-week after this. They play the Bucs next week; he could miss that game, as well.

Earlier in the week, Kyle Shanahan explained that the only way Purdy could reaggravate his toe injury was based on what he was told by the team doctors:

If you ever got caught in an awkward position on a tackle is where you could hurt your toe again. But it doesn’t work like an ankle or anything like that. I think they got him on that when they took him down. So, whether it’s scrambling or just getting tackled was kind of the worry of it.”

When the 49ers promoted Adrian Martinez early Thursday afternoon, it was a sign that Purdy might miss more time. The team would need to waive Martinez, risking losing their QB3 in the waiver process, to get him back onto the practice field.

Mac Jones was not on Week 4’s injury report. Purdy might need multiple weeks for his toe to heal, as he did after Week 1. The estimated time for Purdy’s initial injury to return was anywhere from 2 to 5 weeks. Could we see a similar situation this time around?
