Conor McGregor actually seems motivated to fight again.

The sport’s biggest star has been languishing on the sidelines for ages now, sailing around on yachts and losing court cases. Most recently, McGregor was supposed to fight Michael Chandler back in July 2024, but a broken toe derailed his would-be comeback and sent him back to the open seas for well over another year now. Though he has publicly lambasted UFC and Dana White for refusing to book a comeback date, McGregor has been more focused on his political aspirations and partying.

At no point in 2025 has McGregor looked particularly ready to compete.

Potentially fighting on the UFC White House card has changed all that, as McGregor has firmly committed himself to the event and says it’s a done deal. Whether its the prestige or the alleged $100 million payday, “The Notorious” seems highly motivated to finally make his comeback next June.

What happens afterward though? McGregor has two fights left on his UFC contract, and per the man himself, he’s uncertain if UFC will want him to stick around beyond those two bouts.

“I am McGregor, I do as I please,” the Irish star told Bro Bible. “Let’s see how the future shakes out. Obviously, I’ve got my UFC contract. I’ve got the fight in the White House coming up in eight months time, then I’ve got one more fight on my contract. The UFC have to come to me with business. They may try and secure me for longer. I don’t know what they’re going to do. They have a decision on their hands to make: do they secure me or do they let me go? I am unsure. All that matters for me is my preparation. What lays ahead after that? I am ready.”

If indeed McGregor does fight at the White House next year, the negotiations will be very interesting, as UFC is unlikely to willingly release one of their biggest stars into free agency. Even at 37 years of age after four years away from action, McGregor is still important and valuable to the company! As we saw with Nate Diaz’s free agency situation, matchmaking can get real ugly if “Notorious” pursues his freedom.

If McGregor really wants to fight for his Bare Knuckle Boxing Championship (BKFC) show, however, that might be his only path forward.
