Trevor Lawrence spoke to media about the upcoming Monday Night Football game against the Kansas City Chiefs
Despite a few early losses this season by Kansas City, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence still thinks the Chiefs are the team to beat in the AFC.
Lawrence is winless against the Chiefs, going 0-3 so far in his career against Kansas City, including one loss in the postseason. He'll have the opportunity to pick up his first win against them on Monday Night Football as the Jaguars host Patrick Mahomes and the former Super Bowl champions in primetime.
"It's the next game. It doesn't count for more than the other ones, but it is a big opportunity for us," he told reporters. "It's on a big stage, everybody's going to be watching and I think it's a good next step for our team to take."
Lawrence completed 21-of-31 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown in last week's win against the San Francisco 49ers. The key number for Lawrence was zero, though.
For the first time this season he did not turn over the football, logging zero interceptions or fumbles in the victory.
"Having no turnovers and having that differential really made the game," Lawrence said. "Our defense getting all of them and then us taking care of the ball."
Jaguars' defense allowing Trevor Lawrence, offense to play freely
The Jaguars' defense leads the league with 13 turnovers through four games. They are plus-nine in turnover differential this season.
While it's unlikely the Jaguars can continue their average of at least three turnovers a game, the way the defense plays creates extra opportunities for Jacksonville's offense.
It's something that allows Lawrence and the offense to play freely and use the extra possessions to their advantage.
"When you're getting these turnovers, obviously, it's big for us as an offense," Lawrence said. "We get more opportunities, takes points off the board for the other team. Obviously, when you get the turnovers you get better field position, all those things for us."
The Jaguars were able to score 17 points off of turnovers against the Niners, highlighted by Travis Etienne's 48-yard touchdown to open the scoring for Jacksonville.
While the defense has been flying, there are still areas of concern for the Jaguars. Namely, their continual pre-snap penalties on offense.
They Jaguars were flagged 12 times for 90 yards against the 49ers, bringing their total to 50 penalties this season. They are the most penalized team in the NFL with 10 holding calls, seven illegal shift penalties (the most in the league) and seven false starts.
According to Lawrence, once the offense fixes those mistakes they'll be able to play even better.
"I think we're playing free, but there's just some more execution things that we’ve got to clean up on offense," Lawrence said. "I know how good we could be as an offense. I know we haven't even showed that yet, and obviously we've done some things really well, but I think putting it all together, that's what's exciting.
"There's still a lot more that we can achieve and that we can do offensively. So, I'm just excited to put it all together.”
