3 potential X-factors on the Buffalo Bills defense vs. the New England Patriots in Week 5

X-factors for the Bills defense against the Patriots in Week 5.

The Buffalo Bills continue their 2025 NFL season with a matchup against the New England Patriots at home at Highmark Stadium in Week 5. It will be a "Sunday Night Football" affair.

While game plans, coaching, and strategy will play a part, but sometimes a big emphasis will sit with some individual players. In terms of the Bills defense, who could those be?

Here are three potential X-factors on the Bills (4-0) defense against the Patriots (2-2) on Sunday:

LB Terrel Bernard

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye can move. He's not Bills QB Josh Allen, but Bernard is in charge of Buffalo's defense. He needs to make sure the Bills are in the right spots to stop Maye from extending drives with his legs.

DE Joey Bosa

Another great way to slow down the Patriots offense is with Joey Bosa.

Bosa has two sacks this season but Pro Football Focus ranks him as the sixth-best edge defender in the NFL. He will be against another vet in Morgan Moses at right tackle, who only slated as PFF's 39th best tackle in the league this season.

CB Christian Benford

Stefon Diggs will want his touches against the Bills in his return to Buffalo. Diggs has lined up both in the slot and outside this year, but slightly more out wide.

Bills cornerback Christian Benford has been up-and-down this season and he can redeem himself with a big effort against Diggs. PFF only ranks Benford as their 56th best cornerback this season.
