The San Francisco 49ers went down to Los Angeles to take on the Rams on Thursday Night Football in Week 5.
The Rams were favored heading into the game as the 49ers were dealing with all kinds of injuries on the roster. Most importantly, starting quarterback Brock Purdy was out, as were wide receivers Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings.
As a result, former New England Patriot Mac Jones was again tasked with being the starting quarterback. Additionally, former Patriot wide receiver Kendrick Bourne also started for the Niners. And the result?
Both former Patriots performed admirably and helped lead the Niners to an upset victory on the road. Jones threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, while Bourne caught a whopping 10 passes for 142 yards.
Jones’ 342 yards is the second-highest total of his career. His highest mark, 382, came as a Patriot in 2022 against the Minnesota Vikings. Bourne, meanwhile, tied his game-high catch total and set his new career-high yardage total.
ln large part due to these performances, the Niners were able to escape Los Angeles with a 26-23 victory.
Of course, it makes sense why Jones and Bourne would have chemistry. The two spent three seasons together in New England, and Bourne, alongside tight end Hunter Henry, was one of Jones’ favorite targets. That chemistry has obviously translated, and the Niners took advantage on Thursday.
Bourne ended up spending four seasons with the Patriots. The veteran was locked in an extremely tight battle this offseason, though, and was one of the odd men out. Bourne was cut by the Patriots before Week 1 and quickly latched on with the Niners, who he spent the first four seasons of his career with.
Jones, meanwhile, is in his first season in San Francisco after spending last season as the backup in Jacksonville. Jones was a first-round pick of the Patriots back in the 2021 NFL Draft, but never quite lived up to his draft status.
