Is the sixth-round pick the next guy?
With the Pittsburgh Steelers on their bye week, this week’s mailbag focuses on the future at the quarterback position. Let’s dive in.
Q: Since the team is on a bye, I’ll ask a question that both reflects on the immediate past while looking towards the future. Almost all of the college QBs that were predicted to be picked high in the draft are under performing so far this year. What other positions should the Steelers be targeting in the draft after seeing their weaknesses through four games? – Recchi’nBall
A: Quarterback should still be the main focus. If you don’t have a quarterback, everything else is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. You are right, though, in the fact that a lot of the projected top quarterbacks are struggling. Drew Allar has lost me in terms of being the guy I’d like to see the Steelers draft. Cade Klubnik and Clemson are a mess. LaNorris Sellers has underwhelmed. But, Oregon’s Dante Moore could be a name that continues to rise. Fernando Mendoza of Indiana is a name to continue to monitor, as well. Quarterback needs to remain that main focus, but to answer your question for other positions to watch, cornerback would be a good place to start, considering Darius Slay’s age. Safety, as well. And of course, wide receiver.
Q: Reports are that Howard is ready to get off IR. There are a lot of people who are convinced he’s the future (or at least, one piece of it). Is Howard coming to the 53, and if so, who’s leaving to make room? Are we going to deal Thompson to make room, or maybe Rudolph? – p-squared
A: If the Steelers find a team willing to give them something for Skylar Thompson, then that would be the most ideal way to get Howard on the 53-man. I don’t think they’d just redshirt him and keep him on IR all year, but it’s not a zero percent chance they do that. But if they do find a trade, it will be for Thompson; Mason isn’t going anywhere. I don’t think Howard is the future, personally. Seems like an awesome dude with the right attitude who wants to be a sponge and learn all he can, so I’d certainly root for him if he were given the chance, but my bet is still on a quarterback getting drafted in the first round.
