After scoring 27 goals in La Liga last season and finishing second in the Pichichi trophy race, many expected Robert Lewandowski to continue leading the Barcelona frontline amicably this season.
However, the reality has been quite the opposite, with the Pole yet to really establish himself as a regular starter in the team, notably falling behind Ferran Torres in the pecking order.
Although the Pole has impressively racked up four goals in six matches, he was once again ignored by coach Hansi Flick in Barcelona’s recent game against Paris Saint-Germain.
The German opted to leave Lewandowski on the bench, with the Pole appearing as a substitute in the last 20 minutes of the game.
Lewandowski’s future and the road ahead
According to Catalunya Radio, Lewandowski’s close circles suggest the veteran forward understands why he has received regular game time this season.
In fact, they believe the current situation will motivate him to perform even better in training so he can prove a point to Flick.

The striker, for his part, remains convinced that he can turn things around and once again become Barcelona’s top choice in attack.
However, there have been no talks regarding his future even though the contract is expiring at the end of the season. The player seems more than keen on continuing for another year.
As per the report, Barcelona are expected to assess the situation in January, when there will be a meeting between the two parties to discuss the player’s future.
Until then, Barcelona will continue to monitor and fitness levels of Lewandowski, who is the highest earner in the team and will turn 38 next summer.
Keeping that in mind, Barcelona are unlikely to extend his contract further unless the player makes an excellent turnaround this season.
