Pittsford took down Concord, led by a standout effort from their offensive line. The team looks to enjoy the win before getting back to work.
PITTSFORD — The Pittsford Wildcats continue to look every bit the contender they were projected to be.
Behind another big night from senior quarterback Jake Drawe and a defense that delivered when it mattered, Pittsford took down Concord, 44-24, on Friday in 8-man football. The win pushed the Wildcats to 5-1 overall and marked their fifth straight victory, keeping them on track in the SCAA-B title race.Pittsford has won every game in the streak by double digits, with the offense scoring 50 or more points in the previous four. Even against a strong Concord squad that fought to close the gap late, the Wildcats’ composure and consistency held firm.
First-half control
Pittsford built a 22-8 lead by halftime thanks to a fast-moving offense anchored by Drawe’s 7-yard touchdown run, a 3-yard scoring pass to Ethan Pickford (2-point conversion), and touchdown runs from Hunter Peiffer and Brendan Nave.
Concord’s backfield kept the game close, their top back finishing with 19 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns.
Still, the Wildcats’ ability to control tempo behind an experienced offensive line set the tone.
“I really thought they were the difference in the game tonight,” Burger said. “Concord had some talented players up front, but our offensive line was just tenacious. We executed, we got our angles, we stayed low and did the things we needed to do. That group’s probably come as far as any offensive line I’ve had.”
That unit — anchored by veterans Nate Wickard, Zach Schutte and Dylan Jenkins — helped the Wildcats finish with 297 rushing yards and 113 passing for a total of 410 yards of offense.
Flags did fly at a high-rate from the hands of the referees. There were 22 penalties accounted for in the game, including 14 for 98 total negated yards against Pittsford.
Drawe leads balanced attack
Drawe carried 23 times for 210 yards and three touchdowns while completing eight of 11 passes for 113 yards and another score. He spread the ball around effectively, connecting with Peiffer, Pickford and Nave throughout the game.
Peiffer added 42 rushing yards, two total touchdowns and 29 receiving yards. Pickford contributed 27 rushing yards, 35 receiving and a touchdown catch, while Nave totaled 41 receiving yards and a 10-yard rushing score.
“We’ve got to keep working hard, stay dedicated and not let up in practice,” Drawe said. “The line especially — they blocked their souls out tonight. They deserve a lot of credit.”
Concord rallies, defense responds
Concord cut the deficit to 36-24 midway through the third quarter after scoring on a 38-yard run. But every time the Yellowjackets threatened, Pittsford found a response.
Drawe’s 5-yard and 3-yard rushing touchdowns in the third quarter gave the Wildcats breathing room, and Peiffer’s 29-yard touchdown reception from Drawe in the fourth quarter sealed the win.
"It's a little bit like collegiate football," Burger said. "You play that bend-don't-break style defense, you're patient, you don't give up big plays, and I thought we did that tonight."
The defense’s defining moment came late in the fourth quarter when Ethan Pickford tipped a pass in coverage that was intercepted by Mondale Kneffler and returned 33 yards. The turnover halted a promising Concord drive and allowed Pittsford to drain the remaining clock.
"We made some timely plays and tackled fairly well in space."
Pickford led the defense with seven tackles to go with his offensive output, while Drawe added seven tackles and two assists from his linebacker spot. Wickard and Henry Cornett each recorded a sack, and Kneffler added six tackles in the secondary — Nave earned five.
Focus on the now
If Pittsford wins their next two games — on the road at Camden-Frontier and homecoming night against Waldron (5-1) — it would secure back-to-back league titles and potentially clinch a third consecutive playoff berth. A win against 5-1 Climax-Scotts to end the season could also secure that playoff berth, alongside potential home field advantage in the postseason.
When asked about the team’s path ahead, Burger kept his focus squarely on the moment rather than the standings as the team celebrates the victory they secured.
“Yeah, you know, we don’t really think about it that way,” Burger said. “We’re just happy and thankful that we were able to get a win tonight over a high-quality team. Coach (Max) Clark does a great job. I thought their quarterback was great, and their running back ran the ball hard. They’re a talented team, so it’s a good win for us and I’m proud of our guys.”
He added that the Wildcats’ approach has been to enjoy each step without looking too far ahead.
“We’re going to enjoy this victory tonight and then tomorrow we’ll get back to work and we'll start thinking about the next game,” Burger said. “That's where our mindset is at. We’re not thinking about anything far out. We’re just right here in the here-and-now.”
Drawe echoed that same message.
“We just have to keep building off what we’ve done and play our game.”
With five straight wins, a dominant line on both sides of the ball and their toughest matchups still to come, Pittsford continues to look like a team built for the postseason, but as the coaches and players echoed, tonight was about one game and the moments that brought them the victory.
They'll visit Camden-Frontier on Oct. 10 for a 7 p.m. matchup. The longtime rivals have already soared past 60 games played between them in history. It should be another exciting night of football as the regular season begins to reach its conclusion.
