Villarreal midfielder Santi Comesana did not hold back in his post-match comments following his team’s 1-3 defeat to Real Madrid

The Yellow Submarine’s frustration was clear after teammate Santiago Mourino was sent off for a challenge on Vinicius Jr., a decision Comesana labelled as unfair and influential in the outcome.

Speaking to DAZN (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Comesana criticised referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez, stating that “if it is already difficult to win at the Santiago Bernabeu, with this kind of thing it becomes much more complicated.”

Reflecting on Real Madrid’s goals

He reflected on the team’s performance, noting that Villarreal started the game well, employing a mid-block strategy and quick counterattacks.

“We came here hoping to win and get something positive. We started the game well and with the idea of going out quickly on the counterattack, and it worked out well for us.

“But then the goal came, which Vinicius shot, bounced off me and ended up going in… that’s when we left the game,” he explained.

He also expressed frustration over the penalty awarded to Real Madrid, saying, “For me, it has to be something else.

“It’s a penalty that hurts us a lot because we were in the game at 1-0. You just have to see how he (Vinicius) shoots, he shoots with both feet…”

Mourino’s red card sparks outrage

The decisive moment for Villarreal came after Mourino challenged Vinicius while the match was still competitive. Comesana described the incident.

“Then you have to see the expulsion (of Mouriño), he gets in front of (Vinicius) and sends him off.

If it’s already difficult to win at the Bernabeu, with this kind of thing it’s much more complicated.”

After the sending-off, Villarreal were reduced to ten men, leaving them with minimal chances to equalise.

The team’s task became even harder when Real Madrid capitalised on a defensive error, with Kylian Mbappe scoring the final goal to seal a 3-1 victory.
