Post season paths set for area squads with high school volleyball sectionals set to begin Oct. 14
Time to serve up the sectional pairings in volleyball with their release by the IHSAA on Sunday.
Regionals will be just one match and sites for the southern half of the state include Greenfield, Cascade, Monrovia, Bloomington North, Loogootee, Mitchell, Morristown and Charlestown. Assignments will be announced after conclusion of sectionals.
Here are the sectional matchups for the Bloomington, Bedford and Martinsville areas, with Z-Ratings used for select teams.
Class 4A at Terre Haute South
No. 17 Bloomington South (24-5) comes in as the favorite to grab its first sectional title since 2018, but the Panthers will have to take the long rout, tabbed to play the single-game opener against No. 38 Terre Haute North (12-11). The winner gets No. 37 Terre Haute South (12-10). The Panthers beat both squads this season while compiling a 4-0 record in Conference Indiana.
Defending champ Bloomington North (7-16) and Martinsville (10-17) will kick things off in the semifinals. The Cougars won their regular season matchup in five sets.
The winner will play the Castle Sectional champ at the regional.
Class 4A at Floyd Central
Bedford North Lawrence (12-12) and favorite and four-time defending champ No. 10 Floyd Central (20-4) drew the byes to the semifinals.
The Stars will await the winner between No. 30 Providence (15-12) and No. 42 Seymour (12-13), two teams that will play Oct. 6, with the Owls and BNL meeting Oct. 7 in their HHC contest.
The HIghlanders get the winner between Jeffersonville (6-18) and No. 25 New Albany (17-7).
Winner will play the Franklin Sectional champion at regional.
Class 3A at Edgewood
The host Mustangs (14-11), who have won five of their last six, have a favorable path to the sectional final, drawing a 4-16 Speedway club, with the winner playing Indianapolis George Washington (0-8), which won just one set this season.
Owen Valley (5-16) wasn't nearly as fortunate, drawing No. 55 Cascade (16-11), which won a 25-13, 25-9, 25-17 match on Aug. 21., with the winner taking a shot at defending champ and No. 11 Northview (25-5). Four of the Knights losses are to 4A top-20 teams Plainfield and Zionsville and the other to Bloomington South.
Winner plays the Frankfort Sectional champion at regional.
Class 2A at Sullivan
There are four top-40 teams here and the semifinals should be quite a show.
No. 79 Eastern Greene (9-15) is in the opening match and has a tough assignment with No. 21 Sullivan (20-5). The winner gets No. 32 South Knox (12-11). The bottom bracket has No. 12 Linton (19-7) vs. West Vigo (11-11) and No. 1 Barr-Reeve (24-4), winner of eight straight sectional titles at three different levels, takes on struggling North Knox (1-20).
Winner plays the Tecumseh Sectional champion at regional.
Class 2A at Clarksville
Mitchell (7-18) draws a bye in the bottom bracket and will await the winner between No. 37 Crawford County (15-12) and Salem (10-15). The top bracket, the host Generals (2-21) meets the strong favorite, No. 5 Eastern (Pekin) (23-5), with the winner advancing to face Paoli (5-23).
Winner plays the South Ripley Sectional champion at regional.
Class 1A at Clay City
If Lighthouse Christian (18-7) is going to make another run to the sectional title match, it'll have to do it the hard way, drawing defending champ Shakamak (17-7) in the opener. Lakers are ranked 24th. The other top bracket matchup is Clay City (9-11) vs. Cloverdale (2-15).
Bottom bracket has Dugger Union (5-17) vs. No. 39 White River Valley (10-10) and North Central (0-21) gets Bloomfield (4-18).
Winner gets the Loogootee Sectional champion at regional.
Class 1A at Loogootee
No. 18 Shoals (20-3) will be after its first sectional title since the single class days in 1993. The Jug Rox open with North Daviess (11-15) with the winner getting No. 38 Orleans (15-10).
The top bracket has No. 26 and two-time defending champ Loogootee (8-15) drawing winless Medora (0-20) with the victor taking on Vincennes Rivet (4-13).
Winner gets the Clay City Sectional champion at regional.
