5 takeaways from the Buffalo Bills' 23-20 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 5

Here are five quick observations from the Bills' first loss of 2025 against the Patriots in Week 5.

The Buffalo Bills are undefeated no more in 2025.

The Bills (4-1) were beaten for the first time this season by the New England Patriots (3-2) on "Sunday Night Football" in Week 5 in a 23-20 final.

Both teams played a messy game at times. It was more often the the Bills playing poorly with several different types of miscues on both sides of the ball.

With that, here are Bills Wire's five takeaways from the Bills' loss to the Patriots:

Turnover problems

In an uncharacteristic way, the Bills turned the ball over multiple times against the Patriots. Quarterback Josh Allen included. The Bills QB had an interception and lost a fumble. Wide receiver Keon Coleman put the ball on the ground, too.

Three turnovers is an easy way to earn your first loss.

Destroyed by Diggs

In his return to Orchard Park, Patriots and former Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs did whatever he wanted. Diggs had 10 catches for 146 yards and nearly scored twice as he was tackled at the goal line.

The Bills secondary was poor in coverage all over the field. Particularly cornerback Tre'Davious White struggled.

Ugly game

Turnovers? Not just that. How about 11 penalties for the Bills. That got in the way over and over again.

James bottled hurt Josh

For the first time this season a defense shut Bills running back James Cook down. He was limited to just 49 rushing yards and did not have a catch. That seemed to make things harder on Allen, too.

Patriots put Bills on notice

While the Bills' lead in the division is still intact, the Patriots did send a message to the AFC East and NFL. They are not going to make it easy on Buffalo in their quest for a sixth-straight divisional crown.
