Daniel Sturridge has urged former Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah to ‘change his game’ after a difficult start to the season.
Salah broke the Premier League record for goals and assists in a 38-game campaign last term, but has endured a challenging start to the current campaign.
The Egyptian has four goal involvements in seven games, but his numbers for shots, dribbles, chances created and fouls drawn per game have dropped significantly.
The 33-year-old produced an anonymous performance in Saturday’s defeat at Chelsea. Salah had the fewest touches of any outfield player and failed to complete a take-on or have a shot on target
Speaking post-match, Sturridge suggested Salah may need to evolve as his career reaches its latter stages.
“[Salah’s] not actually taking as many shots as he has done,” Sturridge said on Sky Sports
“The team are typically used to playing through him. He’s the one who takes the shots, he’s the one who’s sort of the anchor for the team, who controls the way the attack is going to go.
“His touches in the box are way down – almost half of what he had last season at this stage.
“Mo might have to change his game slightly because you’ve got new players who are in here and expecting different things from him, as well.
“This team, over the last five years, Mohamed Salah has been the main man and I don’t think in his mind he’s ready to let that go… As he shouldn’t, as last years performances were top tier.”
