Detroit Lions now have clear possible trade partner for edge rusher help

The Detroit Lions should be in the market for an edge rusher given their lack of options at the position and a new potential trade partner has emerged based on a report from the team's beat writer.

The Detroit Lions have yet to make a significant move at the edge rusher spot this year despite having a clear need at the position.

It remains to be seen if that move will ever come, but a new possible trade partner for the Lions may be emerging if general manager Brad Holmes wants to load up for a potential Super Bowl run, something he most definitely should do.

According to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, teams around the league are eyeing the 1-4 New Orleans Saints as a team that could sell off some of its pieces as the trade deadline approaches next month.

"There are teams interested in some of the Saints' veteran players and they'll be watching to see who becomes available in the coming weeks, league sources tell me," Underhill reported on Saturday. "There's a feeling around the league that New Orleans will be open to hearing offers in the coming weeks."

For the Lions' purposes, the Saints have three edge rushers to look at. Detroit could use cornerback help, but the only one we're interested in is Kool-Aid McKinstry and it's doubtful New Orleans will move off the young defender.

The list of potentially available edge rushers in New Orleans includes Carl Granderson, Chase Young and Cameron Jordan.

We can probably immediately cancel out Young, who has had concerns about his effort over the years and that is not a culture fit in Detroit.

Granderson is the most attractive edge rusher of the three because of his age (28) and 4.5 sacks, which are tied for seventh in the NFL. Granderson is also under contract through 2027, so he won't just be a rental.

That said, it remains to be seen if the Saints would part ways with him because he is still young enough to be relevant if New Orleans can right the ship in the next few years.

Jordan would be a welcomed addition.

Granted, he isn't the same player he once was, but the eight-time Pro Bowler is still having a solid start to the season with 2.5 sacks and there's not really any long-term strings attached given the fact that he's going to be a free agent in 2026, which is important to note given Detroit's tight financial situation in the next few years.

Jordan does have a whopping four void years attached to his deal, though, so the Saints picking that up will likely be a sticking point.

If we had to bet on which one of the three the Lions would acquire in a hypothetical trade, we would say it's Jordan. That said, given the lack of action to address the position this year, we aren't holding our breath for the Lions to make a move.
