The Pittsburgh Steelers might be even more short-handed at wide receiver after Calvin Austin suffered a shoulder injury in Week 4.
An initial report from Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette revealed that Austin is expected to "miss at least several games" with an unspecified shoulder injury, which is terrible news for an already shaky wide receivers room.
The Steelers returned from their Week 5 bye on Monday and Austin was asked about his status moving forward.
Unfortunately, he did not rule out a trip to injured reserve, which would knock him out for a minimum of four games. At the very least, it looks like Austin will miss some time.
"Steelers WR Calvin Austin III said he’s not sure if injured reserve is a possibility for him with his shoulder injury but he’s trusting the plan from the team, taking it one day at a time as he did with his oblique in the preseason," The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Brian Batko reported.
Austin is serving as Pittsburgh's No. 2 wide receiver behind DK Metcalf, but the early returns haven't been great.
After tallying 70 yards and a score in Week 1, Austin has just 69 yards and one touchdown in the last three games.
It would be great to see second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson step up if Austin is out, but the 2024 third-round pick has been nowhere to be found this season. He has just two targets and one catch and has played just 44 snaps all season.
In fact, Wilson's snaps have actually gone down in the last two games. He tallied a career-high 22 in Week 2, but then followed that up with nine snaps in Week 3 and three snaps in Week 4.
It has been abundantly clear that the Steelers need to make a move at wide receiver and Austin's injury only drives that home more.
