High school boys golf: Lone Peak leads Corner Canyon by one stroke after competitive Day 1 of 6A state tournament
The chase for the 6A state championship looks like it will be a two-team race again between Corner Canyon and Lone Peak after Monday’s opening round, while the medalist chase is wide open.
Lone Peak sophomore Blake Brown shot a 7-under 65 during the opening round of the state tournament at Sleepy Ridge Golf Course in Orem on Monday, while seven other golfers are within four strokes. Two are one shot behind, two are two shots behind and three more are four shots behind.
With eight golfers in the mix, and all capable of going low on any given day, Tuesday’s final round has the makings for some drama.
The team race should be equally as tight.
Lone Peak shot a team score of 275 on Monday and will take a one-stroke lead into Tuesday over Corner Canyon, which shot a 276. The Chargers are seeking a third-straight 6A state championship.
Bingham sits in third place with a team score of 285.
Brown birdied eight holes, including No. 17 and 18 to seize the Day 1 lead with a 65. As a freshman last year he finished in a tie for sixth.
Brown’s Lone Peak teammate, senior Austin Jones, got hot late as well with birdies on six of his last seven holes to finish with a 6-under 66. Corner Canyon senior William Pizza also shot a 66 after going out and shooting 30 on the front nine.
Bingham’s Will Barrick and Riverton’s Jaxon Erickson each shot 5-under 67s, while Corner Canyon’s Drew Wilson and Jack Summerhays shot 69s.
Tuesday’s final round gets underway at 9 a.m.
