Some suggested the Kansas City Chiefs were powered by devil magic in 2024. If that was, indeed, the case, the spell looks to have worn off in 2025.

Kansas City's march to the Super Bowl was shaped, in large part, by its ability to win close games. The Chiefs weren't just good in single-score matches. They were perfect, going 11-0 in the regular season en route to their third-straight Super Bowl appearance.

Some of those wins were due to chance. But the vast majority revolved around strong execution in the game's final moments. With Patrick Mahomes leading the line and Andy Reid barking out orders from the sideline, composure was certainly a strength for Kansas City.

That doesn't to be the case thus far in 2025. The Chiefs have dropped a handful of single-score matches, seeing their record-breaking win streak in such affairs fall by the wayside.

So, just what is the deal with Kansas City's shaky displays in tight games? Here's what you need to know.

Chiefs record in one-score games 2025

With their defeat to the Jaguars on Monday night, the Chiefs fell to 0-3 in one-score games this year. Kansas City. The strong form they displayed throughout their record-breaking streak in such contests seems to have vanished, replaced by an unsteady force that looks to shine through in all three elements of play.

Here's a look at the Chiefs' performances in one-score games this season, from their season-opening defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers to their Week 5 meltdown vs, the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Week 1 vs. Chargers

Kansas City's success in 2024 when playing in close games was incredible, but all good things must come to an end. In the first game of the Chiefs' 2025 season, they lost to the Chargers 27-21.

It was their first loss in a one-score game since Christmas Day of the 2023 season, which was a 20-14 defeat to the Raiders in Week 17. In every other matchup within an eight-point margin since then, Kansas City was victorious.

As the Chargers seek to put an end to the Chiefs' AFC West dominance this season, it was a key win for Jim Harbaugh's squad led by a 318-yard day from Justin Herbert.

Week 2 vs. Eagles

Misery found company in Kansas City's Week 2 defeat vs. the Philadelphia Eagles, with the Chiefs once more falling victim to a single-score loss, 20-17.

There is no shame in losing to a side of Philadelphia's caliber. Still, the nature of the defeat -- which saw Patrick Mahomes complete just 16-of-29 passes for 173 yards, one touchdown and one interception -- left a sour taste in Chiefs' enthusiasts mouths.

Week 5 vs. Jaguars

The Chiefs looked well-equipped to handle the Jaguars' threat in the first quarter, opening up a 14-point advantage over their AFC South opposition in Week 5.

But that lead came crumbling down amid a barrage of Trevor Lawrence scores. Jacksonville's signal-caller stumbled, bumbled and fell to the ground late in the fourth quarter. But he rose up, found space and slipped into the end zone out of detection. That touchdown proved decisive -- the Jaguars notched a 31-28 victory over their heavily-favored opposition. The result was historically-significant for Jacksonville; the Jaguars hadn't claimed a victory over the Chiefs since 2009.

It also proved infamous for Kansas City, who suffered its first defeat in a game it led by two touchdowns or more in 23 matches.
