Chelsea are reportedly looking at a deal to sign a new 6ft 3in centre back who has developed a lot lately.
The Blues had to play with a makeshift back line on Saturday in their 2-1 win against Liverpool in the Premier League and perhaps what was even worse than that was that both starting centre backs came off injured in the game and Chelsea are now with hardly any fully fit centre back options in the ranks.

19-year-old Josh Acheampong started the game and although he looks like a top and solid option, he also came off injured into the second half. Even still, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel was raving about the young defender after the game, calling him ‘the real deal’.
However you look it at, Chelsea are probably in need of a new centre back in one of the next two transfer windows and it’s clearly a position that Maresca wanted to add to in the summer.
They’ve been linked with a host of centre back names, so how about we throw a new one into the mix!?
Chelsea in for Schlotterbeck?
Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck has emerged as a key target for the Blues recently, with his current contract set to expire in 2027, meaning he could soon become available.
That is according to former Manchester United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who they say remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Dortmund could cash in on the centre-back in 2026.
“Schlotterbeck is somebody I’ve seen a fair bit of,” Brown said.
“At first I had a few concerns about his lack of pace, but he has got better and better and turned himself into a very capable defender.
“He’s a dominant centre-back, a regular for Germany, and a very defensive option who likes to win tackles, win headers and take charge of the back line.
“I think he’s exactly the type of player Chelsea need, because I’ve heard they’ve been having a look at him.
“They need to improve in defence because their current options aren’t good enough, it’s harsh but I think that’s been proven already this season.
“He would certainly be an improvement on what they’ve got at the moment, and it might not be easy to get him because Dortmund won’t want to lose him, but he’s somebody they seem to have identified who could improve their defence.
“If they’ve done the work and done their due diligence, I can see them making a move for him.”
