Jermain Defoe says he wouldn’t hesitate to coach Rangers if the opportunity comes

Former Rangers striker Jermain Defoe has admitted that he would not hesitate to return to the Ibrox club in a coaching role if the opportunity arises. Rangers are without a head coach after sacking Russell Martin on Sunday night following a woeful stint during his 17 games in charge. Defoe spent three years with the Light Blues towards the end of his playing career, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2020-21. He also worked as a coach at the club and was named as part of a four-man caretaker team responsible for leading Rangers during the pursuit of a new permanent head coach following the departure of Steven Gerrard in November 2021.

Defoe was made the under-18s coach of Tottenham Hotspur in August 2022 before leaving the role in July 2024 to concentrate on a managerial career.

It remains to be seen whether Rangers will be open to appointing him as their next head coach given his inexperience, but the 43-year-old is open to returning.

“100 per cent,” he replied when asked about coaching Rangers again.

“ I think it is well documented, the time I had there, and winning arguably the most important league in the club’s history.

“Myself, Steven and all the boys did that and it was amazing to be a part of it. It is more than just a football club and I think I understood what it was about.

“I understood when you put on a Rangers shirt you have to win, and the demands and the standards. I have said it from day one since I retired. I have done all my coaching badges and if I got an opportunity to come back to this football club to help this group of players, for me it is a no-brainer.”

Rangers have been linked with a couple of names so far as they look to get in a replacement for Martin as soon as possible.
